Khyabje Kalu Rinpoche was one of the greatest Buddhist saints of this age. He was recognized as a reincarnation of Jamgon Kongtrul the Great, a prolific scholar, a doctor and a diplomat, a “Tibetan Leonardo”. His Holiness, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, once said Kalu Rinpoche was also an incarnation of Milarepa, the great Tibetan saint. Born of devout practitioners, Kalu Rinpoche entered his first Three Year Retreat at the age of 16. Then he did another. He then went into solitary retreat for 12 years in the mountains of Tibet, before becoming Abbot of his own monastery.

Kalu Rinpoche was highly revered by the heads of all the major and minor Tantric schools of Tibet. His respect for all religious traditions was shown in his personal meeting with Pope John the 6th in 1970. His love for all living things has been expressed through over 65 Dharma centres established throughout the world.

Here was a being who radiated compassion without judgement, impartial love for everyone, having transcended all worldly concerns.

Even then, some faithful patrons of his previous incarnation felt unusually joyful, both physically and mentally, upon simply seeing the child’s face. From that moment, persons near and far spread the news: “The Supreme reincarnation of our spiritual master has been born!
